Inspired by the , we¡¯re showcasing some of the incredible stories and experience of people throughout our organisation.

Morgan, Custody Officer, Wellington

¡°I began my journey with 51½ÖÉä in September 2015 after returning to New Zealand from a trip around South Africa. At this time, I took up a position as a Station Support Officer (SSO). Prior to this, I had worked for TVNZ, in retail, the accounting sector and then in the recruitment sector.

¡°I spent seven months working in the Hutt Valley District as an SSO before taking up a new role as a Custody Officer at Wellington Central Police Station - a position I still hold today.

¡°At the age of 19, while working for an accountancy company, I made my first application to join Police. Unfortunately, I was stood down for two years due to my lack of life experience. At this time, I made an effort to undertake studies that would not only benefit myself but would also be valuable to Police when re-submitting my application.

¡°I enrolled and undertook levels 1, 2 and 3 of NZ Sign Language at Victoria University - a skill I have used in my current role. I also completed Law by correspondence to obtain basic knowledge of the New Zealand legal system, as well as Criminology/Profiling, Psychology and Forensic Science.

¡°Over the years, I have spent time undertaking volunteer work with Billy Graham at his boxing academy and have also done stints of volunteer work at Ronald McDonald House in Newtown.

¡°The role of Custody Officer has enabled me to practice and understand the core values of Police and expand my knowledge of policing. I still intend on re-submitting my application in the hope of becoming a police officer and I believe the knowledge and experience I have obtained in my six years in Police will add value to my application as I have no false illusions about what policing involves.¡±
