More than 40 protestors occupied the Kaitaia Airport today disrupting flights to the Far North town.
About 11am the protestors made their way into the airport.. The protestors set up a makeshift camp around the grounds of the airport.
Two flights to and from the airport were disrupted by the protest. The first one left, but took no passengers and a flight due to arrive at 5pm didn¡¯t leave Auckland as protestors threatened to block the runway.
Far North Area Commander Inspector Wendy Robilliard says there are three flights a day to and from Kaitaia and they often carry medical staff and supplies and patients.
¡°This protest has the potential to threaten the wellbeing of patients and other passengers should an emergency occur during an inbound flight.¡±
Police iwi liaison officers have been speaking with the protestors and the protest has been peaceful. Police will be monitoring the situation.
Media please note: There will be no further statements from Police tonight unless further information comes to hand.
