The school is a full primary and by the third term found that it was beginning to get students who had been expelled from the local intermediate. This created tension at the school between the new students and those who had been there all year. The school had already implemented PB4L, but wanted something that would complement what it was already doing. The principal contacted Police about Kia Kaha a whole school approach to preventing bullying.Short-term goalTo decrease the risk of bullying in the school area. Long-term goalStudents who are new to the school will not demonstrate bullying behaviours. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school is well into implementing PB4L, which is creating a marked improvement in students behaviour. Kia Kaha was implemented to enhance the work the school is already doing in terms of policies, student consultation, and student engagement. Community connections The school liaised with surrounding schools to assist with monitoring students who might end up at the school. Curriculum teaching and learning The school delivered classroom lessons based on Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/kia-kaha/kia-3" Kia Kaha for years 78 resources. The SCO supported some of these lessons to give them bigger impact.ImpactThe school reported that there was a significant drop in the amount of fighting and bullying occurring within the school environment during school hours. However, this could also be because fewer students from other schools were enrolled during the targeted term. Next stepsThe school continues its measures for positive behaviour for learning from their students, which will benefit them when they are in the community. ObstaclesTeachers from the immersion classes werent fully involved with the intervention and so didnt teach the Kia Kaha programme in its entirety. This also had an impact within the playground, as there did seem to be some division between the senior classes.ImprovementsThe intervention would be more effective if the whole school became involved, which may mean interpreting and developing Kia Kaha resources in accordance with a Mori world view.ConclusionThe school is proud of the decrease in reported bullying by students within its environs.
